Epilepsie-hulphonden maken momenteel geen onderdeel uit van het basispakket van de zorgverzekering. Met het EPISODE-onderzoek werd onderzocht of de inzet van epilepsie-hulphonden effectief en kosteneffectief is voor volwassenen met ernstige refractaire epilepsie. Valérie van Hezik-Wester promoveerde op dit onderzoek, met het proefschrift getiteld Unleashing the potential of seizure dogs: their clinical, economic and broader impacts in the management of epilepsy.1
